Introduction of City

Cairo mirrors Egypt, being a city that embodies past and present. It is the very center of Egypt and is the focus of politics, economics and culture. Crowned with past glory, Cairo is the guardian of various cultures and civilizations. Cairo is a unique city of the kind seen nowhere else in the world, with its mixture of Pharaonic, Greek, Roman, Coptic and Islamic civilizations. Every area of Cairo has a distinctive atmosphere, and visitors leave for home with a feel for the city that is almost impossible to put into words.

History

カイロの歴史Al-Qahirah, or Cairo, was built in 969 by Gawhar as-Siqilli, commander of the Fatimid army. He built a wall around the town to protect it from invasion. There are 6 gates, or “Bab”, and 3 of them (Zuweila, El-Nasr, and El-Fetouh) are still in existence. Throughout city’s history, Cairo has been the capital of Egypt. It has experienced big changes with modernization, its transformation into a metropolis, and in terms of its population. Cairo is now the biggest city in Africa and the Middle East, and maintains relationships with other cities throughout the world, contributing to progress, prosperity and the furtherance of international cooperation.
