Tokyo has been the capital of Japan for 400 years, since the start of the Edo period. Over the centuries it has suffered the ravages of earthquakes and war, but in the postwar period was the engine for Japan's almost miraculous economic growth.Today, about 12 million people, around 10 percent of Japan's population, live, work, study and spend their leisure time in Tokyo.Home to the highest levels of politics, business and culture, the city is Japan's economic and social center. At the same time, Tokyo faces many urban problems, including a declining business sector, chronic traffic congestion, and a deteriorating environment. The challenge for Tokyo now is to make maximum use of the unique advantages it possesses; effect needed change; and continue its growth into an even more highly advanced mature city.
