Introduction of City

Seoul is roughly divided into the North and the South region since the Hangang River, which has a total length of 514 kilometers, flows through the city. The North region is the center of politics and culture as an old city, and there are a lot of government and municipal offices’ buildings, cultural institutions, and other historical buildings. Yeouido, a sandbank of the Hungang River, called “Korean Manhattan”, is the heart of finance and has many broadcasting companies. The South region, newly developed area, is an economic activity base especially in Gangnamu-gu and in Songpa-gu. The plastic arts are formed by large numbers of high-rise residential buildings stood alongside the Hungang River, as well as a railroad bridge across the river, a water-friendly park in a dry waterbed, and Olympic road.

History

ソウルの歴史It is presumably several thousands years ago when human being started to live in the Hungang basin, an important area in the Korean Peninsula. The area was called “Hanseong” in Paekche period, from the beginning of the 4th century to A.D. 660, “Hansanju” in the Three Kingdom period, and then, “Yangju” in the Goryeo period from A.D. 918 to 1392. In 1392, Yi Seong-gye, Korean Taejo, named southern area of Mt. Bugaksan “Hanyang” based on Feng shui geographical theory, and settled the capital in the current place. After the independence in August 1945, it was called “Seoul,” which means capital in Hungul, Korean language. From 1960’s to 1970’s, the city was expanded by large scales development in the South region of the Hungang River and by incorporation with surrounding areas. Being the host city of Olympic in 1988 was an opportunity to make the world know the name of Seoul as a big city in Asia, obtaining an established position as an international city. While Seoul is one of the world’s prominent ancient cities with the history of about 600 years as a center of politics, economics, and culture, it has promoted a plan to become hub city in North-East Asian city in the Pacific Age of the 21st century.
