Introduction of City

Sao Paulo, the center of Sao Paulo metropolitan area, is the biggest and the most important state of industry and economy in Brazil. The most economic activity concentrates in this area due to its location in the southeast of Brazil.

History

サンパウロの歴史Sao Paulo was developed into the big city from the small village built by priests of Society of Jesus in 1554. The oldest building, constructed by Society of Jesus, still remains at downtown. Since colonists started at Sao Paulo de Pilatinga to pursue slaves, money and jewels, the city developed as trade center and a symbol of authority of Portuguese Colony. Immigrant mostly from Italy and Spain coming with the coffee boom in 1880’s became major labor force instead of slaves. In 1882, Brazil declared independence in Sao Paulo. At the beginning of 1900, most citizens moved to the South, not only because of drain in the North but also that of the wealth and prosperity in the South. As the number of small landowners decreased over the past 30 years because of development, tenant farmers were forced to move to metropolitan area. The population of farmers in Sao Paulo dropped from 37% in 1960 to 9% in 1990.
